Primer
Garrus Vakarian is a major character in the Mass Effect series, serving as a squadmate in all three games. He is a turian, a race of avian alien known for their military prowess and previously strained relations with humans. An expert marksman and tactical expert, Garrus embraces vigilantism after becoming disillusioned by bureaucracy and corruption on the Citadel. This leads him to join Shepard on their mission to save the galaxy.First Impressions
Encountering him as a member of Commander Shepard's team, he can initially be sarcastic, cynical, but ultimately friendly. Turians have a flanged voice, meaning it sounds layered. Garrus is also a very tall armored bird alien, which can be intimidating for the human who doesn't spend every weekend with them. He's aware of that and won't crowd someone unless he Personality
Summary
Turians are a hierarchical, authoritarian race, with a strong sense of duty reflected in him. Garrus stands out with a passion for justice that supersedes the rules. He joins Shepard after struggling against the bureaucracy and inaction of the Citadel. While his father drilled "do things right or don't do them at all", Garrus follows "it doesn't matter how you do it—do the right thing". Pinch of estrangement. His closeness with a crew of other species also alienates him a bit from his fellow turian, though he's not a pariah. There's few strong friendships we see with other turian, though his loyalty to his turian military unit, his crew on Omega, and the Normandy is rock solid. He leans on humor hard among the friends he has, especially irreverent and on the cusp of certain death. He could swap rude turian-human jokes all day. Let him cope.
Calm and kind in private, Garrus is overconfident and ruthless on missions. As delightfully noted by Joker, Garrus "worked that stick out of his butt" on the Citadel, only to start "trying to beat guys to death with it." He does still wrestle with some doubt. In turian culture, his vigilantism is condemned as undisciplined and little better than a thug. He wants validation and confidence from those he trusts, but can be steered in his extremes by Shepard. The outcome can be more violence as means to an end or introspection about his limits.
All that vigilante bravado hinges on being in uniform though. Garrus has barely mastered civilian relationships, in or outside his species. He's flustered by small talk and with women. His comedy runs tragically bad. His pick-up lines are worse. Garrus is just a hyperfocused do-good geek, at heart.
Biology
Their blood is cobalt blue and they are dextro-amino based—in short, they cannot eat human food, requiring their own make of molecule. The only other species known to be dextro-amino is the quarians. Unlike the quarians, turians almost exclusively eat meat, obligate carnivores. Turians live as long as a human in the ME universe, but do mature a bit quicker, joining the military at age fifteen. They do give birth to live young despite their avian similarities.
Turians don't sweat, but their tough metallic plating shields them from excess heat and radiation. They can shed heat the way birds do—by opening their mouth. The species is highly sensitive to cold despite being warm-blooded. Behind the flexible beak-like mouth are very sharp teeth, guarded by expressive mandibles on both sides. They also have a flanged voice, an effect that can sound like an underlying purr or a second vocal layer.
They can be sexually compatible ( you're welcome. ) with most species with some finesse. Garrus himself is not well versed in how they'd make that work, but the proof is in the in-game porn. Humans and turians tend to have a mild allergic reaction to one another's proteins (the dextro-amino issue), so per Mordin's advice—don't swallow without a Benadryl.
In Mass Effect 2, Garrus is seriously injured by a gunship and gains a major facial scar on his right side. See before and after. As with turian tradition, Garrus has dye-tattoo markings on his face that indicate colony or regional origin. It's implied that Garrus is at least moderately attractive by turian standards, and we see a female turian giving him a double take. Then again, might be the cool scars.
Although most in-game companions are seen around Shepard's height, it's been highlighted elsewhere that Garrus is significantly taller and that was a necessary modeling issue. He technically could fall anywhere in the 6'8" to 7'0" (203.2 to 213.36 cm), but we're scaling down for sanity. Seriously, compare fem!Shep's common fanon height and him at 6'8". This already raises too many questions. I'll treat him a little shorter in most cases so situations aren't ridiculous, but I need you to know in your heart that he has only ever seen the top of Shepard's head.

Looking for (Gen)
- Some trope favs are First Contact War AU (still at war, one side won, etc.), transported to another world, bodyguard AU, mafia AU, found a baby, pirate AU, ME fix-its, missing scenes. Here for suggestions.
- Fem!Shep bestie is always top, big fan of all Shepards, Tali, Liara, Thane, Legion. Mordin is a precious, precious guy.
- Open to cross-canon and OCs, whether integrated to either canon or universe hopping.
Looking for (Ship)
- Leans heavily M/F, but if the M/M shoe fits. Might just be surprised it works and even more awkward.
- Open to canon, cross-canon, and OCs that click, fan of besties in love, slow burn, FWB, love-hate. He doesn't have a human fetish, but the right chemistry makes all the difference.
- Poly is all good because we know Shepard is out here trying to romance everyone on the crew. He is competitive though.
- Will go smut-ish for CR building and those cute intimate moments we love, but otherwise FTB. Let's be real, writing full scale alien porn is gymnastic. Glad to coordinate the dirty details to reference.
- Fav is fem!Shep. Shipping is non-necessity, he's a-okay just being Shepard's best bro. Though I do love filling in all the heartfelt and fun stuff we never got to see (or they never got to have).
